5 Albums Out This Week That You Need to Know About (Week of November 1, 2024)
My weekly list of five new music releases out this week that I'm pretty excited about checking out!
Bill Laurance and Michael League, Keeping Company (ACT)
Pianist Bill Laurance and bassist Michael League have known each other since their student days, when they bonded over their shared love for diverse genres like classical, soul, folk and jazz. Their latest duo album, Keeping Company, strips down to an intimate, organic sound, blending the piano and oud into an exploration of their personal musical language, free from technical embellishments and full of spontaneous, soulful dialogue. Release date: November 1.
The Cure, Songs of a Lost World (Polydor/Fiction)
Songs of a Lost World marks The Cure's 14th studio album and their first since 2008, bringing new music penned entirely by Robert Smith. Many of the tracks debuted live during the band's 2022-2023 world tour. Release date: November 1.
Laila Biali, Wintersongs (self-released)
Eighteen months after her JUNO-nominated Your Requests, Laila Biali returns with Wintersongs, a heartfelt suite inspired by the beauty of Canada’s winter landscapes. Created during a Banff residency and featuring guests like flautist Jane Bunnett and orchestrator Rob Mathes, Wintersongs blends jazz with sweeping natural imagery, capturing winter’s magic in every note. Release date: November 1.
Nesrine, Kan Ya Makan (ACT)
In her second solo album, Kan Ya Makan, Franco-Algerian artist Nesrine blends French, Arabic and English to tell deeply personal yet universally resonant stories. With influences from Khalil Gibran to Gainsbourg and a strong presence of the cello, Nesrine’s music explores a rich, intimate landscape, supported by producer Vincent Huma and rhythmic layers from percussionists Rhani Krija and Anissa Nehari, offering a captivating journey of sound and soul across eleven intense tracks. Release date: November 1.
Willie Nelson, Last Leaf on the Tree (Legacy)
Last Leaf On The Tree, Willie Nelson’s 76th studio album, was produced by Willie’s son Micah and explores themes of life's finality through tracks by Tom Waits, Beck, Sunny War and others, as well as original songs. Nelson’s longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael, producer Daniel Lanois, former Doors drummer John Densmore and more join on this deeply personal collection, culminating Willie’s reflections on ageing and legacy. Release date: November 1.
